black bean burger with tomato, onion, lettuce and avocado

Nobody will ask "where's the beef" when they try this delicious vegetarian option.

If you're watching your red meat intake, try this easy vegetarian burger option. It's simple and affordable to make your own patties.

Serves 4

  • 1 can (15-ounces) low sodium black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • ½ - 1 teaspoon chili powder (depending on preference)
  • 2 tablespoons canned green chilies
  • 1/3 cup oatmeal

Line barbeque grate with appropriate grilling foil. Preheat grill to 400 degrees.

In a mixing bowl, mash black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly pureed. Stir in condiments and spices until well combined. Then mix in oatmeal.

Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into thin patties. Cook for 7 minutes, carefully flip over and cook for another 7 minutes or until crispy on the outside.

Place on bun/bread with preferred condiments and enjoy.

Note: Burger can be cooked in an oven at 400 degrees or in a skillet.
