About the PazSalud Health Mission

Mission

PeaceHealth is committed to utilizing the gifts of our health care system to improve the lives of Salvadorans who live in poverty.  In our medical missions and through our ongoing presence in El Salvador, our teams provide free health care for people with very limited resources.  Our mission team members experience the joy of direct, hands-on caregiving and learn about the realities of life and health in the country.  El Salvador's social and historical context confronts our mission caregivers with fundamental moral issues of war, poverty, justice and faith.  Intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually, volunteer caregivers gain a deeper and richer understanding of the experience of health care in developing countries and a deeper connection to PeaceHealth’s international medical mission called ‘PazSalud.’

Vision

PazSalud (‘PeaceHealth’ in Spanish) envisions a world filled with healthy, happy people.  We strive to improve the health of El Salvador, using as our guide the mission and values of PeaceHealth and of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace and we work with groups and individuals who are willing to join us in this endeavor.  Meanwhile, we carry on the healing mission of Jesus Christ by promoting personal and community health, relieving pain and suffering, and treating each person in a loving and caring way.

History

PazSalud is an international medical mission jointly founded by PeaceHealth and the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace (CSJP).  It was designed to be an opportunity for their caregivers and members to volunteer in delivering health care services to underprivileged people in El Salvador, believing that this service is a powerful expression of the mission of both sponsors.  The Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace have collaborated with the people of El Salvador since their civil war in the late 1980s, initially by working in wartime refugee camps.  PazSalud, founded by Sr. Eleanor Gilmore and PeaceHealth in 2000, is an extension of that relationship with the people of El Salvador.
