Our mission, vision and values

While the world around us is always changing, we stay focused on what matters. Guided by our mission, PeaceHealth has offered hope, healing and peace to communities in the Pacific Northwest since 1890.

Our Purpose

When you need care, you deserve compassion, understanding and respect for what matters most to you.

This belief has guided PeaceHealth since our founding sisters opened our first hospital in 1890. Today, our doctors and care teams listen to your needs, take time to understand what matters to you, and treat you with the respect and devotion that has guided us for generations.

A message to our caregivers from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace

"May you always be who you say you are: Healers, bearers of hope, a compassionate presence, holding in your hearts deepest respect for each person and doing what you do so that our little space in this corner of our world might be a more healthy, whole and peace-filled place.

You are a Spark of the Divine — bringers of hope, healing and compassion to those in need. Thank you, 1,000 times, for who you are and for what you do in the name of PeaceHealth."

— Sr. Kathleen Pruitt, SSJP

Our Mission

We carry on the healing mission of Jesus Christ by promoting personal and community health, relieving pain and suffering, and treating each person in a loving and caring way.

This Mission is more than a statement of purpose. It's the foundation for everything that we do. When you choose PeaceHealth, you're choosing care that:

  • Honors your dignity and worth as a person.
  • Addresses your needs as a whole person — body, mind and spirit.
  • Supports not just you, but your entire community's health.
  • Reflects the core values that have guided us for more than 130 years.

Our Vision & Values

Every person receives safe, compassionate care; every time, every touch.

Your safety and well-being are PeaceHealth's top priorities. This vision shapes how we hire and train our caregivers, design our hospitals and clinics, deliver our care and services, and partner with local nonprofits to improve community health.

Statement of Common Values

PeaceHealth's core values of respect, stewardship, collaboration and social justice define how we provide service.

We welcome collaborative partnerships that strengthen our ability to serve the common good, which is realized when economic, political and social conditions protect the fundamental rights of everyone we serve.

Our Heritage

The Catholic order of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace founded PeaceHealth in 1890 with a simple but powerful aim: to bring healing and hope to those who need it most.

Their charge at the time was to build a hospital in a remote corner of Northwest Washington to care for the loggers, mill workers, fisherman and their families who had settled in the area.

More than 130 years later, Sisters' commitment to serving others, especially the most vulnerable, remains at the heart of PeaceHealth's work. While our hospitals and clinics have grown and changed over the decades, their spirit of innovation, compassion and devotion to health justice defines how we show up for our communities — today, tomorrow, always.
