The da Vinci Surgical System allows physicians to perform minimally invasive procedures that before, could not have been done using traditional surgical techniques. With the use of robotic-assisted surgery our doctors can now perform complex surgery using 1-2cm incisions. What’s more, a recovery period of less than 48 hours - half the time after a conventional surgery - lets our patients go home with significantly less pain, and virtually no scarring.

About Robotic Surgery

The da Vinci Surgical System allows physicians to perform minimally invasive procedures that before could not have been done using traditional surgical techniques. With the use of robotic-assisted surgery our doctors can now perform complex surgery using 1-2cm incisions. What's more, a recovery period of less than 48 hours - half the time after a conventional surgery - lets our patients go home with significantly less pain and virtually no scarring.

Seated at a console, the physician views the surgical area through a tiny endoscope camera that reveals three-dimensional images magnified significantly larger than the actual size. The controls at the console allow the physician to move the robotic "hands" with precision, eliminating the natural tremor of even the steadiest of human hands.

Most commonly used in the treatment of urological and gynecological conditions including prostate and gyn cancers, da Vinci is benefiting patients who without this technology may not be candidates for minimally invasive procedures.

Patient Benefits

When medication, lifestyle changes and other non-surgical treatments cannot relieve symptoms, surgery is the accepted treatment for a broad range of conditions. Surgery can be a scary proposition for a patient, no matter how routine the procedure. If surgery is recommended, you want to learn as much as you can about your surgical options and find the physician and hospital that are right for you.

While surgery is generally the most effective treatment option for a range of abdominal and other conditions, traditional open surgery has its drawbacks – pain, trauma, long recovery time, significant scarring, and risk of infection.

Fortunately, less invasive options are available to many patients facing surgery. The most common of these is laparoscopic surgery, in which smaller incisions are used. Until now we haven't been able to use minimally invasive technology for more complex operations.

A New Category in Minimally Invasive Surgery

Thanks to the latest evolution in surgical technology, physicians now have an effective alternative to traditional open surgery and laparoscopy that allows them to provide patients with the best of both approaches. With the assistance of the da Vinci Surgical System, surgeons can now operate using only 1-2 cm incisions, but with greater precision and control than ever before. Robotic surgery can help surgeons minimize the pain and risk associated with surgery while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.

Changing the Experience of Surgery

The da Vinci Surgical System has multiple benefits to patients including optimally desired outcomes.

  • Reduced blood loss
  • Less risk of infection
  • Reduced length of stay for post–procedure care
  • Reduced surgical site
  • Less scarring
  • Less post-procedure pain
  • Less anesthesia
  • Effective tumor control
  • Effective results related to continence
  • Effective results related to erectile dysfunction
  • Faster and more complete recovery

Robotic Surgery FAQs

What is Minimally Invasive Surgery?

In the past ten years, new devices have given surgeons the ability to conduct surgery through small incisions. We call this type of surgery "minimally invasive" because it does not require large incisions and long hospital stays. The techniques and devices, which are sometimes called "scopes," bring a lot of benefits to patients. At PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, we're committed to using them whenever and wherever we can.

The benefits of minimally invasive surgery include:

  • less pain, trauma, and loss of function to the patient
  • decreased blood loss during surgery
  • increased safety
  • shorter recovery

Not all surgeries or exams can be minimally invasive. PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center surgeons and other specialists perform more than 50 different surgical procedures using minimally-invasive techniques. A few of these include:

  • Gall Bladder Removal
  • Appendectomy
  • Hernia Repair
  • Thyroid Treatment
  • Liver Biopsy
  • Kidney Surgery
  • Ovarian Cyst Removal
  • Sinus Surgery
  • Spine Surgery
  • Orthopedic surgery

What is the da Vinci Surgical System?

The da Vinci Surgical System uses advanced robotic technology allowing physicians to operate through small, dime-size abdominal incisions and direct robot “arms” to perform surgery with a variety of specialized surgical instruments. Seated at a console, the physician views the surgical area through a tiny endoscope camera that reveals three-dimensional images magnified significantly larger than the actual size. The controls at the console allow the physician to move the robotic “hands” with precision, eliminating the natural tremor of even the steadiest of human hands.

What are the advantages of the da Vinci Surgical System?

  1. A quicker recovery. Robotic surgery reduces pain and trauma to the body, allowing patients to recover quicker and return to their normal activities faster than with traditional open surgery.
  2. A better view. Cameras used in normal endoscopic surgery provide two-dimensional images. The da Vinci system provides 3-D images that can be magnified allowing physicians to get a better look at the operating area.
  3. More with less. The da Vinci allows surgeons to use minimally invasive surgical techniques for a greater number of surgical procedures.

What procedures can be performed using the da Vinci Surgical System?

The daVinci Surgical System is currently being used to help treat the following conditions:

  • Urological surgeries (surgical treatment for prostate cancer and other conditions affecting the prostate)
  • Gynecological surgeries (hysterectomy, endometrial and cervical cancers, ovarian masses, pelvic floor surgeries, uterine fibroids)

Surgery Procedures

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) allows physicians to perform many kinds of major surgery with less patient trauma and pain, minimal scarring, faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. Surgeries are performed through small incisions, which replace the large incisions needed for conventional open surgeries.

The use of robotics takes minimally invasive techniques into a new era, further minimizing the physical and emotional impact of surgery on patients. With minimally invasive surgery, the goal is to accomplish internal repair while leaving the body surface as natural as it was prior to surgery.

Robotic-assisted surgery procedures at PeaceHealth Southwest:

  • Urology procedures
  • Gynecology procedures
  • Thoracic (lung) procedures
  • Weight loss (bariatric) surgery

Many procedures require only several days in the hospital and promote reduced recovery time. Patients can often get back to their normal routines more quickly.
