Surgical Care for Special Needs
Illnesses or injuries can often be treated with relatively simple measures such as medication, rest, changes in diet, exercise or other non-invasive therapy. But, in some cases, surgery is the only answer.
A few examples of procedures commonly performed by surgeons include:
- hernia repair
- stomach surgery
- hemorrhoids
- removal of the appendix
- removal of the gall bladder
- breast surgery
- colonoscopy
If you need an operation, your primary-care doctor may refer you to a surgeon. After making sure that surgery is the best option for you, the surgeon will help you prepare for the operation.
Where your surgery is done will depend on the type of surgery. If it's relatively minor, it may be done in a procedure room at the doctor's office. Major surgery is usually done in a hospital or outpatient surgery center.
Also depending on the type of surgery and your health, you may be able to go home the same day after your surgery. Otherwise, you might need to stay in the hospital to recover.
Whenever possible, surgeons use "minimally invasive" tools and techniques to help you heal faster.
