General Surgery

Surgical Care

Illnesses or injuries can often be treated with relatively simple measures such as medication, rest, changes in diet, exercise or other non-invasive therapy. But, in some cases, surgery is the only answer.

General surgeons commonly perform procedures for:

  • Hernia
  • Stomach
  • Small intestine
  • Hemorrhoid
  • Appendix
  • Gall bladder
  • Breast
  • Colonoscopy
  • Colon
  • Upper GI endoscopy
  • Vasectomy
  • Skin cancer

Some surgeries have to happen quickly on short notice or in emergencies. Other types of surgery can be planned in advance.

If you need an operation, your primary-care doctor will refer you to a surgeon. After making sure that surgery is the best option for you, the surgeon will help you prepare for the operation.

Where your surgery is done will depend on the type of surgery. If it is relatively minor, it may be done in a procedure room at the doctor's office. Major surgery is usually done in a hospital or outpatient surgery center.

Depending on the type of surgery and your health, you may be able to go home the same day after your surgery. Or you may need to stay in the hospital to recover.

General surgeons use "minimally invasive" tools and techniques whenever possible so that you heal faster.
