Practice Area Rotations

The Pharmacy Practice Residency Program prepares practitioners through mentored training and clinical experiences. Rotations are uniquely designed to suit individual needs and interests of pharmacy residents.

The program is structured according to ASHP’s (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists) Residency Learning System.

Pharmacists completing this residency function as independent patient-focused practitioners, who are able to provide pharmaceutical care in an acute care clinical practice, develop the necessary knowledge to pursue a PGY-2 or seek a career in academia.

Orientation & Concentrated Learning — 4 Weeks

These areas are to be covered early in the residency. Residents are expected to acquire the general skills necessary to care for patients in their required longitudinal or required rotations. The typical length of a rotation is four to eight weeks for these and other learning experiences in the Hospital and Pharmacy Orientation.

  • Chemotherapy 
  • Code Blue/ACLS training
  • Renal dosing adjustments
  • Nutrition support
  • Information systems
  • Computer training
  • Basic skills orientation
  • Pharmacokinetic training
  • Policies and procedures
  • IV Admixture

InPatient Rotations — 34 to 38 Weeks

The resident is expected to consecutively build on knowledge from previous rotations or learning experiences when caring for patients. For example, if a resident has completed the Internal Medicine rotation, we’ll expect the resident to apply internal medicine knowledge to a patient they’re following in the critical care rotation.

  • Cardiology: 6 weeks 
  • Critical Care: 6 weeks
  • Emergency Medicine: 4-6 weeks
  • Electives: Outpatient Oncology, Informatics: 4 weeks
  • Infectious Disease: 6 weeks
  • Surgery: 4 weeks

Required Longitudinal Experiences — Arranged in with Rotations

Longitudinal experiences occur one of two ways: 1) During your rotations; and 2) Outside of your rotations, as part of the required ancillary responsibilities of the residency through activity participation (i.e., Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee support).
