St. Joseph Medical Center Emergency vehicle access at Squalicum and Ellis

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The next phase of construction of the Peter Paulsen Pavilion at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center will require temporary closure of the emergency vehicle Emergency Department access route at Squalicum Parkway and Ellis Street, beginning this Friday, Nov. 21, through Friday, Dec. 12.

Emergency vehicles will instead use the main public entrance farther west on Squalicum Parkway. Patients and visitors should be aware and prepared to please yield to ambulances if necessary.

Fire engines will park on the north side of Squalicum Parkway near the Emergency Department, just west of the bus stop.

Emergency Department patients and visitors may continue to park in designated ED parking areas or in the Central Parking Garage. A temporary marked ADA-accessible path with signage will lead from the Central Parking Garage alongside the construction zone fencing to the ED and Northwest Medical Center, aka Fountain Building.

Construction of the Peter Paulsen Pavilion will expand services for women’s and children’s care and the Emergency Department, in order to serve the growing Whatcom County community. The six-story addition will be integrated into the west side of the hospital and is expected to be completed sometime in 2028.

PeaceHealth has created a dedicated website for construction updates: www.peacehealthimpact.org. Readers can submit questions and sign up to receive updates.

We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we navigate the construction of this major project.
