What happens at your appointment

A mammogram is basically an X-ray of your breast tissue. PeaceHealth offers 3D mammography for detailed results.

Most people find their appointments quick and manageable. Here's what happens at your visit:

  • You'll undress from the waist up and put on a gown.
  • Standing in front of the mammogram machine, your technologist will place your breasts on a platform, one at a time. A plastic plate will briefly apply pressure for less than a minute. While some find this uncomfortable, many are surprised by how quick it is.
  • After your appointment, a specialist will review your images and send results to you and your doctor or care team.
  • Getting called for a follow-up screening is common and not necessarily cause for concern. Your doctor may want to get more information.

Common questions

Who needs a mammogram?

PeaceHealth recommends yearly mammograms starting at age 40 for people at average risk for breast cancer. If you're over 40 and have never had a mammogram, it's not too late to start.

What will it cost?

Most health insurance plans cover screening mammograms with no out-of-pocket cost. PeaceHealth also offers financial assistance based on family size and income.

How do I prepare for my visit?

Mammograms usually take only a few minutes. Following these steps in advance can make screening easier:

  • Remove deodorant, moisturizer or perfume from your chest, underarms and breasts.
  • Leave jewelry at home.
  • Wear a top that's easy to remove.
  • Let us know before your visit if you need accommodations.
What's my breast cancer risk?

Anyone can get breast cancer. Genetics, family history and other factors may raise your risk. The National Cancer Institute's breast cancer risk assessment tool can help you understand your personal risk.
