Pediatric Surgery

PeaceHealth pediatric surgeons offer expert medical care with a personal, kid- and family-friendly approach. Pediatric surgeons treat children of all ages, from newborns to teenagers. They have extra training for conditions that only affect children, such as gastroschisis and other birth defects.

The PeaceHealth pediatric surgery team works together to keep your little one comfortable and relaxed. Your child will receive the least invasive methods possible, including endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques. This may mean fewer and smaller incisions, less pain, a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery.

Your team may include neonatologists (newborn specialists) and pediatric-trained anesthesiologists, nurses and support personnel who are with you along the way.

If you want a second opinion, let us help you make a decision that is right for your family.

Pediatric surgery services at PeaceHealth

You can find a PeaceHealth pediatric surgeon at PeaceHealth. Your child will receive the excellent quality and personalized care you trust.

A leader in pediatric chest wall surgery

PeaceHealth is Oregon’s leading medical center for children with pectus conditions or abnormal development of the chest wall. Without treatment, these conditions may cause serious health problems later in life.

Experts from pediatric hospitals

Your child is cared for by surgeons from nationally-recognized pediatric hospitals, right here close to home. These include surgeons from Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Shriners Children’s Hospital in Portland, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and Boston Children’s Hospital.

Dedicated pediatric surgical suites and recovery units

Your child’s surgery takes place in pediatric-specific operating rooms, which have advanced technology. This includes imaging that can be sent to specialists during surgery for consultations in real time. After surgery, children recover in the Pediatrics and Adolescent Care Unit, designed just for kids.

Pediatric telemedicine for traumas and serious illness

Using audio and video technology, telemedicine allows our pediatric team to immediately consult with specialists at the Doernbecher Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Portland. As a result, many trauma patients can stay at Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend instead of going to Portland for care.

Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on-site

Experienced neonatologists (doctors who specialize in newborn medicine) and specially trained nurses provide expert post-surgery care in our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Conditions We Treat

Child development conditions

PeaceHealth works closely with families to diagnose and treat a wide range of behavioral health conditions affecting children. These include ADHD, autism and learning disorders, among others.

Food allergies and sensitivities

Common food allergies and sensitivities include milk, nuts, shellfish, eggs, soy and wheat. Certain additives can also cause reactions.

Heart valve problems

If you have an artificial heart valve, it changes the way blood flows through your heart. Blood movement can also slow down around the valve itself. Both can cause a blood clot. If your valve replacement is made from animal or human tissue (biological valve), you’ll only need to take blood thinners for a short time after surgery while your body adjusts to the new valve.

Tonsillitis

Your tonsils are two masses of tissue at the back of your throat. Tonsillitis occurs when these masses become inflamed, which leads to a sore throat and trouble swallowing.

Treatments Provided

Advanced heart imaging

3D pictures of your heart and arteries that you doctor can view using nuclear medicine,  CTs and MRIs. These include CT angiograms (CTA) and magnetic resonance angiograms (MRA).

Assessment, evaluation and 24/7 crisis stabilization

Behavioral health emergencies and crises can happen anytime - day or night. The team at PeaceHealth provides emergency evaluations, psychiatric assessments and treatment to help make sure loved ones get the care they need, when they need it.

Coordinated cancer care

Your medical oncologist will work closely with you and other members of your care team throughout your care journey. This coordinated, seamless approach helps ensure you receive the care you need at every step of your journey.

Evaluation and consultation

During your initial visit, your doctor will work with you to assess your condition. He or she may see problems that could limit your independence. These may include memory loss, medicine interactions, balance, mental health and sleep status.

Family therapy and support

PeaceHealth offers resources and therapy to family, friends and loved ones to help equip them to support the ones they love.

Social work

Based on your needs, social workers can coordinate care and resources in the community. This helps address concerns you may have, such as financial needs.

Spinal curvature

This condition happens when the spine twists or becomes rounded instead of going in a straight line up the back. Severe curvature may affect posture and cause pain.

Spine surgery

PeaceHealth offers a range of surgical procedures. Whenever possible, we use the least invasive techniques available, including:

  • Discectomy or microdiscectomy – removes material from a herniated disk that’s pressing on the nerve or spinal cord.
  • Disc replacement – removes the damaged disc and replaces it with an artificial disc.
  • Spinal fusion – connects weak or damaged vertebrae to make them stronger, often using metal implants or bone from your body or a donor.
  • Laminectomy and laminotomy – removes part or all of the thin bones in the vertebrae (lamina) that press on the spinal cord or nerves and cause numbness and pain.

Sports medicine services

Evaluate and treat sprains, strains and other sports injuries.
