Using a Home Test Kit for Protein in Urine

Overview

Your doctor may have you check the amount of protein in your urine at home. Increased protein might be a sign that your kidneys are being damaged.

You can buy a simple test kit with urine testing strips at most pharmacies and drugstores.

To test your urine each day, dip a urine testing strip into a fresh sample of your urine. Follow the instructions on the kit. Find the results by matching the color of the strip to the color blocks on the container.

Keep track of your results, along with your blood pressure and whether swelling (edema) is present. Notify your health professional of your results as often as needed. You can also take your recorded results with you to each doctor's visit.
