Caregivers team up to serenade a hospitalized patient who was struggling.

Kelsey Meyers, RN, assistant nurse manager, was making her usual rounds at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield, Oregon when she heard something out of the ordinary.

She followed the sound down the hallway of the neurology unit. What she found when she peeked into one patient’s room warmed her heart.

Two members of the unit’s care team, a certified nursing assistant and a registered nurse, were serenading the patient with a rendition of “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys.

Kelsey saw the marked changes in the patient from days earlier. Out of restraints and freshly showered for the first time since arriving in the hospital, the patient was calm and cooperative—another first.

“Being a patient in the hospital is challenging during the best of times, let alone during the holidays,” noted Kelsey. “I was truly touched by the extra bit of care and compassion that these caregivers were able to provide in support of a vulnerable patient.”

As she left the room, she noticed other staff members nearby who were smiling—clearly moved by their colleagues’ creative encouragement and special kindness.
