Special kindness helps patient go from downcast to delighted

Disappointed that she couldn’t go home for her birthday, a patient in PeaceHealth’s hospital in Cottage Grove, Oregon, was rather downcast until her care team visited her room with a special surprise.

Marta Hantke, MD, the hospitalist caring for the patient, bought a piece of coffee cake from the café and then dressed it up with some whipped cream and a couple of candies.

Carrying the treat, the nursing staff went in to the patient’s room and sang "Happy Birthday” to her. Lana Sherwin, RN, the nurse manager, said “The patient was thrilled and ate every bite!”
