Premature Babies

Babies born after 39 weeks of pregnancy is considered Full Term. Babies born between 37-39 weeks of pregnancy are considered Early Term.  Babies born between 34-36 weeks of pregnancy are considered Late Preterm.  Babies born before 34 weeks of pregnancy are considered Pre-Term. The earlier a baby is born, the greater their risk for complications. Some of these complications include growth and mental development impairments, jaundice, temperature stability issues, respiratory problems and feeding challenges.

At PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center, babies born prematurely are immediately placed in our Special Care Nursery where they receive one-on-one care. Our Special Care Nursery is staffed with skilled nurses and specialized technology, ensuring expert care is provided to babies requiring a higher level of care.

Extended or long-term care may require mechanical support. In these situations, we use infant transport (a specialized transport service) to utilize services found in Everett or Seattle.
