Who Qualifies For Surgery?

Surgical weight loss is not for everyone. PeaceHealth Medical Group Surgery follows American Society for Bariatric Surgery guidelines to determine who could have a surgical weight loss procedure. Typical insurance guidelines include:

  • Have a BMI between 35-69.9*
  • Be within 18 and 75 years of age
  • Have a history of documented attempts at weight loss
  • Not be actively using tobacco products, marijuana, other illicit drugs, or alcohol

*If your BMI is 35-39.9 and have another condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or heart disease, you may be considered for surgical weight loss.
