From the dish room to a dream career: How PeaceHealth Southwest Foundation helped Justin rewrite his future

Justin crouching on a rock in front of a blue sky

When Justin Marteeny first started working in the dish room at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, he didn’t know about the future that was about to unfold. For him, it was a job, reliable, behind the scenes, and far from the front lines of patient care. He showed up every day, did the work, and went home. The idea of a different future didn’t seem within reach.

But sometimes, the right people see something in you before you see it yourself. For Justin, that support came from Foundation members Beth Schoonover Associate Philanthropy Officer, and Heather McEvoy Director of Philanthropy, along with Amy Jensen. Their encouragement planted a seed — maybe there was more ahead; maybe there were opportunities waiting to be recognized.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little encouragement and one meaningful opportunity. For Justin Marteeny, that opportunity came through the PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center Foundation. With support from the Foundation’s scholarship funding, Justin is now enrolled at the University of Phoenix, working toward his Medical Records Certificate.

Although he’s still a familiar face at the Field of Greens in the 92nd Café, serving fresh salads with a steady hand and a warm smile, Justin is looking ahead. He hopes to become a Patient Access Representative; someone who helps patients feel seen and supported from the moment they walk through the door. Thanks to the generosity of donors, Justin is turning that hope into a real and achievable goal.

“I didn’t think I could be something beyond Food & Nutrition Services,” Justin says. “But with the support I’ve received, I’ve made the leap into medical administration.”

That support isn’t just emotional, it’s tangible. It’s the kind of support that changes lives not just for that one person, but for the entire family that stands behind them. Thanks to such scholarships made possible by donors to the PeaceHealth Southwest Foundation, Justin has the resources to pursue his education. He’s earning straight As and building skills in office applications and typing. At home, he’s even set up a small office space to help him stay focused and organized.

“My hope now is to reach the heights of excellence and push myself to be a greater professional, not just for myself, but for the Vancouver community,” he says.

Justin’s story is the perfect example for what happens when someone is given the chance to grow, and what philanthropy makes possible when it meets potential. His journey reminds us that sometimes, transformation starts with someone believing in you and giving you the tools to believe in yourself.
