Celebrating Carl Bell: national recognition for a leader in philanthropy

| Philanthropy

Carl Bell, Development Officer

Philanthropy at PeaceHealth isn’t just about raising funds — it’s about raising possibilities. That spirit is being recognized on a national stage as Carl Bell, Director of Philanthropy at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart, has been named to the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy’s prestigious 40 Under 40 list.

The honor reflects not only Carl’s leadership, but also the values that guide PeaceHealth — compassion, collaboration and a deep commitment to the communities we serve.

A Mission-driven leader

Since joining PeaceHealth in 2021, Carl has become a trusted partner to caregivers and hospital leaders alike. His role isn’t only about raising support; it’s about listening, learning and helping to turn vision into reality. That approach was central to the multi-million-dollar fundraising initiative that launched the Oregon Institute for Nursing Excellence, an effort that is already transforming nursing education and care across the region.

Jennifer Svihus, Chief Philanthropy Officer for PeaceHealth’s Oregon network, describes Carl this way:

Carl is a man of his word; he puts in the hard work. He will give you ten times of what you invested in him. The way he shows up, inspires people and follows through, says so much about him.”

Lessons in listening

Carl’s career has been shaped by moments of listening deeply to others. He recalls one donor meeting with a retired judge that left a lasting impact. While Carl knew the donor had the capacity to give significantly, the conversation revealed something more important: family came first.

“Instead of focusing on a gift, he wanted to talk about supporting his son and grandchildren,” Carl recalled. “That moment changed everything. I realized that my job isn’t just to ask — it’s to understand, to align giving with what matters most to the donor.”

It’s this kind of empathy that defines Carl’s work and reflects the culture of PeaceHealth — a place where caregivers, whether at the bedside or in philanthropy, lead with compassion and integrity.

A reflection of PeaceHealth’s values

When asked how Carl felt about the feature, he said, “Being named to AHP’s 40 Under 40 is an incredible honor. It’s a reflection of the amazing PeaceHealth philanthropy team where we’re encouraged, supported, and challenged to aim high and lead with purpose. On a personal level, I’m truly humbled. This recognition deepens my commitment to keep growing and to contribute in meaningful ways to PeaceHealth’s mission and fundraising excellence.”

Carl’s recognition is more than a personal achievement. It is a testament to the caliber of caregivers who choose PeaceHealth and the values that guide their work. Whether delivering care, supporting colleagues or stewarding generosity, our people embody the Mission of bringing hope and healing to every person we serve.

We are proud of Carl, inspired by his example and grateful for the way his leadership reflects the very best of PeaceHealth.

Congratulations, Carl — and thank you for showing what’s possible when philanthropy and compassion come together.
