Rehabilitation Services

Our Services

Our rural setting presents a variety of opportunities, and challenges, for how and when we serve patients

  • Most of our patients are Ketchikan residents. Ketchikan is well-known for its hills and stairs which often adds another degree of difficulty for our patients.
  • Some of our inpatients leave the hospital to return to small, remote sites on neighboring islands with a variety of transportation and living arrangements which create additional challenges.
  • Some of our outpatients come from these remote areas by ferry or float plane and need to time their therapy to accommodate the ferry or plane schedule if they can only spend the day in Ketchikan.

Our therapists evaluate, develop and implement plans of care for skilled therapy with patient and caregivers

ICU and on the Medical/Surgical Unit
Therapy may be provided in the patient's room, hallway or in the rehabilitation gym located near the patient rooms. The therapy plan of care is provided in coordination with other members of the acute medical care team including doctors, nurses, social workers, the diabetes educator and registered dietician.

Transitional Care Unit
A 29-bed skilled nursing facility, is a separate facility located within PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center. Patients are encouraged to work with therapy within their room, bathroom, hallway, and the therapy gym. The Transitional Care Unit has an outdoor area, an activity room, and a large kitchen area to simulate home challenges. Interdisciplinary team meetings and communication with nurses, doctors, social worker and home health staff assist patients and caregivers as they work toward their goals.

Home Health
Our services take place in the patient's home, including the Pioneer Home. Ketchikan homes are easy to locate. The Ketchikan road system, alongside the ocean, is said to be about "30 miles long and 2 blocks wide," maybe wider in a few places. Home Health Therapists coordinate their services with each other and nursing services.

Outpatient Clinic
The fully-equipped outpatient facility is located on the Emergency Room side of the hospital at street level. Our Outpatient Clinic is spacious, inviting, and comfortable. Funding provided by KMC the Foundation upgraded and added a great variety of therapy and fitness equipment.
