Phil Cahoon

Tribute message and background photo for Phil Cahoon 1945-2024

Phil Cahoon spent 26 years as a dedicated PeaceHealth volunteer at St. John Medical Center in Longview, WA. He volunteered more than 25,000 hours (which is the equivalent of a part time paid employee).  He was generous with his time, compassion and known for his sense of humor.  He always had a dad joke to share with us.

During his time at PeaceHealth, Phil served in the Emergency department, at the Information Desk, and the Cancer Center. He was awarded Volunteer of the Year, had multiple awards for the Most Hours Worked in a year, received an award for being the Most Spirited, and a Best Patient Relations Award.

Phil was a mentor to our youth volunteers and mentorship students. He was an encourager and had a way of making you feel important when you talked with him.  Phil was a shining example that we all can make a difference in someone's life.

PeaceHealth volunteers and Volunteer Services Staff invite you to contribute to a scholarship in Phil's honor.  This scholarship will continue spreading the values, qualities and kindness Phil shared with us during his time here.

"Dear Phil Cahoon, I am so glad I got to meet you this year, I wanted to share this memory of when I met you .. I remember the first day I got there you were there and said hello to me with a great big smile. I’m going to miss the moments when we would go to the ACU floor and you would tell me let’s go get some chocolates, and when I would miss on when you would go you will always have chocolates in your pockets for me and when you told me to never use the elevators because that’s for old people. I’m going to miss all your amazing stories I’m going to miss seeing you Phil may you rest in peace with Lord."

Kristie Green: "I worked in the ED for a couple of years and I had the pleasure of getting to know Phil..."

I worked in the ED for a couple of years and I had the pleasure of getting to know Phil over that time period. On the rough days you could count on Phil to be the light at end of the tunnel. He always has a smile and a joke to brighten your day. When a big decision to move across the country happened for me, I confided in Phil for advice. He was so encouraging and told me that, “You only live once, so do it!” I did end up moving and it was one of the best decisions I had ever made. On my last day working in the ED, I cried as I walked out of the lobby and the last thing I remember seeing was Phil. He was smiling at me and waving when I left that day. I will forever treasure that last memory I have of him. Love you Phil.
