Honoring Dr. Douglas

In 1994, Dr. Douglas arrived in Bellingham from Duke University, bringing specialized expertise in valve and aortic surgery. His work helped establish cardiothoracic surgery at St. Joseph Hospital and expand access to high-level care in our region.

Dr. Douglas was also among the first surgeons in Washington state to perform beating heart coronary artery bypass surgery — helping set a new standard for surgical excellence.

Throughout his career, Dr. Douglas has been recognized for his thoughtful care and steady leadership — guiding patients and families through complex decisions with clarity and compassion.

His expertise has saved thousands of lives and strengthened the foundation of cardiothoracic care in our community, leaving a legacy that will endure for generations.

To honor his retirement, PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation is honored to establish the Dr. James M. Douglas Jr. Cardiothoracic Surgery Endowment Fund.

Created in recognition of his remarkable career and the thousands of lives he touched, this fund will support the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department in perpetuity, ensuring the program he built continues to grow, innovate and deliver the highest quality care for generations to come.
