Biography

The paths we take to reach our goals are not often straight or easy. The road Jeff Ryan MD took to become a surgeon was especially circuitous, and it's especially awe inspiring.

Before he was Dr. Ryan, young Jeff was a farm boy who grew up in Colquitt, Georgia. He married Ellen Coxwell and continued farm work as a laborer and then Herd Manager at a dairy farm. When his daughter was born, he decided he needed something that offered a better future. He took his first college classes at age 22. His academic success surprised him, but not Ellen. Dr. Ryan describes her as "phenomenal". She became a nurse and helped support him as he pursued his undergraduate degree, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Montevallo in Alabama.

He was the first person in his family to go to college.

With an engaging southern drawl, he talks with awe about the science of the human body and his decision to become a doctor. He said, "it perfectly assimilates with my principles of faith, love, compassion and helping others." He received his medical degree at the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Medicine.

A few years ago, the Ryans took a trip to Alaska to celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. While on what they expected to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip, they began to think 'what would it be like to live here?' and so they did their due diligence and that, happily, brought the Ryans to Ketchikan.

They drove up from Alabama to see the country and spent time in Kansas with daughter Jessica, her husband, and their two children (another on the way!). Middle sons Caleb and Luke are in college. Youngest son Josh will be in ninth grade at Ketchikan High School and is already looking forward to playing trombone with the bands.

With Ellen as his 'right hand' Dr. Ryan was most recently in private practice in Haleyville, Alabama. While he loved having his own practice, like many private practitioners, the increasing paperwork and workload was a seven-days-a-week burden. With more time for themselves and Josh, Ellen plans to pursue her interest in photography, scrapbooking and hiking. Dr. Ryan wants to fish.
