Deja Helm NP

Deja Helm, NP, is a nurse practitioner who provides both inpatient and home-based palliative care.

Deja earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, and went on to practice as a bedside nurse in a variety of oncology units. Later she earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Georgetown University in Washington, DC and then practiced as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in an inpatient setting and came to love and appreciate working with patients experiencing a variety of serious illnesses.

“I believe in meeting patients where they are and shaping care plans around their goals, values and hopes, shares Deja. “I have great interest in serious illness communication, and I work to use these skills to ensure shared decision-making with my patients.”

Deja has a great passion for teaching and served on the faculty of Medstar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, leading and constructing workshops on communications involving patients with serious illnesses.

Away from work, Deja loves dogs and is the owner of a Basset Hound and a Bull Mastiff. One day, she hopes to live on a farm and provide a safe haven for neglected dogs who need a home. Along with spending time with her dogs, she enjoys relaxing, watching reality TV and wine tasting.
