These points can take the fear out of your next exam.

I love getting my mammogram…said no one, right?

Getting a mammogram is an important way to detect breast cancer. So, how can you find ways to make peace with this preventive screening?

Here are four facts to put your mind at ease and take the dread out of your next exam.

1.    Mammogram appointments are relatively quick. The actual exam typically takes just 10 minutes. From check-in to check-out, most patients get in and out of the appointment in 30-40 minutes.

2.    Discomfort lasts just a few seconds. Everyone’s experience is different, but many women feel the compression part of the exam is uncomfortable for just a few seconds. If you find mammograms painful or if your breasts are tender on the day of your exam, ask your doctor about taking an over-the-counter pain reliever ahead of your appointment.

3.    Getting a mammogram is affordable. Most insurance plans cover mammograms, depending on age and risk factors. Some facilities also offer free mammograms for people who are eligible. You don’t need a referral, but you will need to let the mammography center know the name of your primary care provider in case follow-up care is needed.

4.    Results from mammograms come back quickly. If waiting for the results makes you anxious, you’ll be happy to know that most mammogram reports are shared within a few days. You’ll often get them first in your My PeaceHealth account.

You might never say you love getting a mammogram, but you’ll have peace of mind knowing you’re doing what you can to catch breast cancer early.
