When people reflect on Dr. James M. Douglas Jr.’s legacy, they speak first of his surgical mastery. What they carry forward just as strongly is how he practiced medicine: with presence, compassion and deep respect for every person he served. Together, these qualities shaped remarkable outcomes and a standard of care that changed what was possible for Whatcom County.
Dr. Douglas came to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in 1994 with exceptional skill and a clear sense of purpose. At the time, the question was bold. “Could a small community hospital build and sustain an advanced cardiothoracic surgery program?” Dr. Douglas believed it was not only possible, but essential. Patients facing serious heart conditions deserve extraordinary care close to home.
As one colleague reflected, “We wanted to serve the people in Bellingham and Whatcom County. And then they found Dr. Douglas to carry that mission forward.”
That mission of service became a reality through leadership and generosity working hand in hand. With Dr. Douglas at the helm and philanthropic support from dedicated donors, St. Joseph grew into a place where patients could receive lifesaving cardiac care without leaving their community.
Dr. Douglas was known for his precision, but patients often remember how he listened and took responsibility for every detail of their healing. When a patient struggled to eat after surgery, he went to find food the patient would enjoy. To him, care was deeply personal and every life mattered.
That humanity was front and center on Saturday, March 14, when the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation proudly supported “A Heartfelt Thanks” — a celebration of Dr. Douglas’s remarkable career and enduring legacy. The event drew a packed house of family members, physicians, nurses, hospital administrators and grateful patients, many of whom shared stories of care that had changed the course of their lives.
As Dr. Ron Moreno shared, Dr. Douglas provided life-saving care to his then 16-year-old son, Paden, but moreover, “he cared not only about saving a life, but about seeing that life continue.” Because of that patient first care, “people lived. Families stayed whole. And miracles walked onto football fields.”
During the celebration, the Foundation announced that the Dr. James M. Douglas Jr. Cardiothoracic Surgery Endowment has already raised more than $90,000. This generosity speaks to the deep gratitude felt by a community whose lives have been touched by his work.
Over more than thirty years, Dr. Douglas helped define what compassionate excellence looks like at PeaceHealth St. Joseph. His impact is seen not only in lives saved, but in a culture rooted in humility, respect, and care for the whole person. As he reflects on his career, his pride remains simple. “I’m most proud that I made a positive impact,” he said.
The Dr. James M. Douglas Jr. Cardiothoracic Surgery Endowment ensures the program he created continues to grow, innovate and provide exceptional heart care for generations to come. As Jerry Marschke, Executive Director for the Cardiovascular Services shared, “His legacy will be that this program continues for another 30, 40, even 100 years, staying at the forefront of advanced cardiovascular care.”
