Guitar music brings out first smile in Isaac, born nine weeks early

Susan Bakouros, MT-BC is sometimes the only person who can get a fussy baby to stop crying.

And she does it just by lifting her finger...or rather fingers.

As a music therapist at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver, Washington, Bakouros plays the guitar, an ocean disk or other instruments to comfort babies in the neonatal intensive care unit and babies working to overcome medical struggles.

She teaches parents how to choose and use a special "song of kin" to sing to their baby as a calming technique during fussy periods. Bakouros also uses music therapy to stabilize the vital signs in her young patients as they undergo uncomfortable or painful procedures.

Watch what one premature newborn did the first time he heard Bakouros play her guitar.
