We welcomed Chanudi Weerasinghe, MD, to the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center team of providers in 2019. Dr. Weerasinghe comes to PeaceHealth from Staten Island University Hospital in Staten Island, New York, where she completed her hematology and oncology fellowship. Dr. Weerasinghe was trained as a general medical oncologist and hematologist but has special medical interests in gastrointestinal cancers, breast cancer and gynecological cancers. Dr. Weerasinghe has researched diverse topics of cancer care. Her recent research has focused on targeted therapy and treatment for early stage and metastatic non-small cell lung cancer, prognostic factors in colorectal cancer, and rare and uncommon adverse events due to immunotherapy. “I strive to work with my patients to provide them with the individualized and empathetic care they deserve—for we do more than cure illnesses; we care for people," she said. Dr. Weerasinghe plays an active role in the communities she serves. For the past several years, she has been involved with volunteer work in many different organizations including but not limited to: the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Surrey Urban Mission and Think Pink Breast Cancer Society. Outside of Dr. Weerasinghe’s community service involvement and direct patient care, she enjoys creative writing, public speaking, playing the piano, field hockey and rugby.
