Family Medicine of Southwest Washington Sports Medicine Fellowship

 

Program Overview

The Family Medicine of SW Washington Sports Medicine Fellowship is located in Vancouver, WA.   Directly across the Columbia River from Portland, OR, Vancouver--known affectionately by residents as "The Couve"-- is the fourth largest city in Washington with a population of about 162,000.  The Fellowship is based at Family Medicine of Southwest Washington (FMSW), a large free-standing and hospital-supported clinic near downtown Vancouver. PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center is the sponsoring institution for both the Fellowship and the Family Medicine Residency. The Residency was established in 1995, and the Fellowship was established in 2015.

The Fellowship, while young, boasts a wealth of faculty experience, institutional excellence, community richness, and high quality of life.  It will provide a broad range of training experiences in numerous settings to equip graduates to excel in many practice settings—primary care, orthopedic, academic, etc. 

Curriculum Highlights

  • Primary Care Sports Medicine clinics with Family Medicine and Physiatry faculty who generously use Sports Ultrasound for diagnosis and intervention
  • Orthopedic clinics with board-certified Sports Medicine surgeons and a large array of orthopedic specialists at Rebound Orthopedics and Neurosurgery, which serves several professional and collegiate sports teams
  • Weekly didactic sessions and Sports Ultrasound training in conjunction with the Sports Fellowship at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland, OR with RMSK-certified faculty who are nationally-experienced Sports US instructors
  • Participation in orthopedic surgeries, physical therapy clinic, casting and splinting clinic, and the OHSU exercise physiology laboratory
  • Unopposed Team Physician experience with NCAA Division I collegiate athletes at University of Portland and 4A football athletes at Skyview High School.
  • Mass participation sporting events including the Portland Rock-n-Roll Marathon, Portland Shamrock marathon, and the Vancouver USA Marathon
  • Availability of ski clinic training at nearby Mt. Hood ski resort, and professional MMA cage side coverage
  • Paid attendance at AMSSM Annual Meeting and ACSM's Advanced Team Physician Course
  • Primary Care continuity clinic at the FMSW residency clinic   

About us

Family Medicine of Southwest Washington (FMSW) is part of the PeaceHealth Columbia Network. PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver, WA is its affiliated hospital. The FMSW Sports Medicine Fellowship was founded by Dr. Kevin deWeber and accredited by ACGME in 2015 and began training its first fellow in 2016. The FMSW Residency was founded in 1995.

Mission and objectives

The primary mission of the Sports Medicine Fellowship is to train family physicians for success in Primary Care Sports Medicine while enhancing the health and well-being of our community. FMSW is committed to innovation and quality in both Fellowship and Residency education and in patient care. In addition, the graduate medical education (GME) programs are intended to provide a service to the community by meeting the medical and health care needs of the medically underserved in the Vancouver area.

University of Washington Family Medicine Residency Network
The FMSW Residency joins 24 residency programs throughout the Pacific Northwest to comprise the University of Washington Family Medicine Residency Network (WWAMI). This affiliation combines the benefits of sharing resources, problem solving and information, with the independence to design and implement a unique curriculum and program style.

PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center
FMSW's GME programs are sponsored by PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center (PHSW). Founded in 1858, PHSW has a proud tradition as the oldest medical institution west of the Rocky Mountains. PHSW is a non-profit organization and is governed by a community board of directors. Ongoing expansion and renovation projects have implemented state-of-the art technologies that enable PHSW to remain a leader in regional healthcare. Attributes of the Medical Center include:
