Social Services

Support for Patients & Loved Ones

Social Services staff meet with patients to:

  • Clarify what to expect in adjusting to the complex journey of cancer treatment.
  • Help with access to necessities such as transportation, financial assistance, disability and health care insurance, caregiver needs, career-related legal rights, and community resources and agencies.
  • Assist in finding resources for co-pays, clinical trials, medication, nutritional supplementation and specialized treatment.
  • Facilitate referrals for rehabilitation, home care, grief support, nutrition, pastoral/spiritual care, palliative and hospice care, and other community programs.
  • Offer on-site support services, promoting hope and survivorship for patients and loved ones, toward learning how to live with cancer. Visit our Support Groups and Support Services pages to learn more about services offered.
  • Work closely with our doctors and nurses to help you and your loved ones cope with depression and anxiety related to cancer treatment.
  • Provide experienced, compassionate support and counseling for issues, including emotional distress, loss, coping with a new diagnosis, considering treatment decisions, and communication with treatment providers, family, and others. Counseling can also cover stress management techniques, learning new self-care and coping strategies, advance care planning, and living wills. We encourage you to include loved ones in counseling sessions if desired.
  • Refer to licensed counselors in the community who are experienced in working with people who have cancer if more intensive or ongoing counseling is needed.
  • Offer a growing survivorship program, focused on optimal quality of life during and beyond cancer treatment. Whether you choose gentle yoga, peer counseling with someone who shares your diagnosis, or the hilarity of a no-talent-required creative art group, there is support to fit your concerns, your outlook, your personal style.
