Thoracic Surgery Procedures Guide

In order to evaluate your lungs and diagnose your condition, your surgeon may need to look directly inside your lungs and look at the area surrounding your lungs.

A thin, lighted tube is inserted through your mouth to examine the entrance to your lungs.

A tube is inserted through an incision above the breastbone to look at the area between the lungs.

Lymph nodes in the chest are examined through an incision in the chest wall.

Small incisions are made in the chest wall and your surgeon uses a thin, tube-like instrument with a tiny video camera on the end of it to look at your lungs on a video monitor. Surgical instruments are inserted in other small incisions and your surgeon can repair a collapsed lung, drain fluid from around the lungs or biopsy a mass in the lungs.

Compassion. Precision. Confidence.
