Clot-busting drugs and other advanced treatments
Comprehensive stroke centers, such as PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, offer advanced stroke treatments designed to restore blood flow to the brain, reverse the effects of a stroke, and prevent any permanent brain damage.
Advanced stroke treatments available at PeaceHealth Southwest include:
tPA (tissue plasminogen activator)
tPA is a clot-busting drug that can significantly reduce long-term disability as a result of an ischemic stroke. It is most effective within the first three hours after an ischemic stroke occurs. An ischemic stroke occurs when an artery supplying blood to the brain is blocked.
Merci Retrieval System®
The Merci Retrieval System is a minimally invasive catheter-based system designed to capture and remove clots in patients experiencing acute ischemic stroke. This device is only used at medical centers with specially trained neurosurgeons and nursing staff.
The Penumbra System is a minimally invasive catheter-based system that vacuums clots out of blood vessels in the brain. It is intended for use on ischemic strokes, which involve blood clots in the brain, and constitute 80 percent of all strokes. This device is also only used at medical centers with specially trained neurosurgeons and nursing staff.
