Little Stars – End of Life Care For Children
A child on hospice care is an extremely dramatic and rare situation. It presents a truly unique set of circumstances that require a special kind of care. The Little Stars program specializes in hospice care for children in an in-home setting.
Traditional hospice care aims to comfort a patient after curative treatment has been discontinued. Little Stars can provide comforting hospice care for children while they are still being actively treated for their illness.
Founded in 2004 by Sacred Heart employees Nancy-Diane Manelli-Brewer and Dora Parys, the program treats about six pediatric patients a year. The Little Stars program has had its story internationally shared by its founders after Manelli-Brewer and Parys attended a conference in Italy. The program is also raising awareness about pediatric hospice care. Manelli-Brewer and Parys are helping to push more insurance companies to cover this special kind of palliative care.
