Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve in your eye. If left untreated, it can result in blindness. In fact, glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness, affecting millions of Americans. Many of those with the disease aren’t even aware they have the condition, until significant vision is lost.

This underscores the importance of regular eye exams. Early detection and treatment can prove to be the difference between retaining your eyesight and serious vision loss or blindness.

Symptoms

Many sufferers don’t experience symptoms at all in the early stages of the disease. While it’s ideal to have glaucoma detected before any symptoms arise, here are some of the symptoms that may be experienced as it progresses:

  • Headache
  • Sudden pain in the eye
  • Blurred vision
  • A loss of peripheral vision
  • Red eyes
  • Nausea/vomiting
