PeaceHealth Orthopedic Surgeons to Provide Free Foot Exams Nov. 20

Orthopedic surgeons from PeaceHealth Medical Group (PHMG) will provide free foot examinations, along with donated shoes and socks, on Wednesday, Nov. 20 for the Lighthouse Mission in Bellingham as part of the national “Our Hearts to Your Soles” program.

Warren Taranow, DO, and Carter Kiesau, MD, of the PMGH Orthopedics, as well as volunteer nurses, physician assistants, orthotics and prosthetics specialists will mark the sixth year of local participation in the program.

That team will be joined by other volunteers, including caregivers from PHMG Internal Medicine, who will provide flu shots. Free flu shots were added to the annual event beginning in 2010.

At PeaceHealth, caregivers began donating new, packaged socks for the event in October. Dr. Taranow anticipates that approximately 175 pairs of donated shoes and socks will be distributed following examinations this year.

“Hearts to Soles,” a non-profit organization that provides free medical foot screening examinations and shoes to less fortunate people, collaborates with local orthopedic physicians and “Soles4Souls” (which facilitates the donation of new shoes) prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Dr. Taranow and his staff have organized and run the event locally since 2008, shortly after the Hearts to Soles outreach began nationally. The local event has expanded each year. In 2008, about 75 men were served; the next year more than 100 received free exams and footwear.  According to Dr. Taranow, the event’s growth and success has been the result of a commitment to serve the community and the support of partner agencies.

“This brings together medical professionals to the benefit of our community, and it aligns with PeaceHealth’s mission of healing,” said Dr. Taranow.

“It provides relief for an underserved community, many of whom find themselves in difficult times due to complex social, medical and economic challenges.  This is a way to help those who need it most – while also providing those most at-risk with appropriate clothing, footwear and vaccinations, lowering their risk of exposure-related health problems,” Dr. Taranow added.

Originally, the event relied on donations from national organizations such as Soles4 Souls and Our Hearts to Your Soles.  Now the PeaceHealth Foundation is a contributing partner. Local support helps to provide shoes for children, as well as gloves for all.  To contribute, donations can be made to PeaceHealth Foundation – Soles4Souls via (360) 788-6866 or online.

“And I want to personally thank the staff at PeaceHealth Orthopedics, Cornerstone Orthotics and Prosthetics, Hoagland’s Pharmacy, Famous Footwear and Superfeet – as well as the Lighthouse Mission – for their skills and generous donation of time and supplies for this ongoing community project,” said Dr. Taranow.
