Peace Island Medical Center to Add Saturday Clinic, Extend Weekday Access

PeaceHealth Peace Island Medical Center (PIMC), the San Juan Islands’ only critical access hospital, will extend its clinic hours beginning in May.

Next month Carrie Sun, MD, a locum (temporary) physician will join the Peace Island team of caregivers. She will work Wednesday-Saturday, enabling PIMC to meet the health needs of a community that increases significantly over the summer months.

PeaceHealth is currently recruiting an additional physician in order to be able to continue expanded coverage after Dr. Sun leaves.

According to Cynthia Cazacopol, director of clinical services, Dr. Sun’s arrival will allow Peace Island Medical Center to open a Saturday clinic and extend current clinic hours.

“On May 11, we will begin offering appointments on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.,” said Cazacopol. “And the clinic’s weekday hours are expanding – as of Monday, June 3 – to cover 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.”

Appointments may be scheduled by phoning 378-2141.

PIMC Medical Director Michael Wingren, MD, said having an additional physician on staff will help ensure Islanders can continue to have this expanded access to health care.

“Our commitment to this community has never wavered,” said Dr. Wingren. “Increasing the hours that we are open is a big step on the journey to ensuring Islanders have access to the care they need – here at home. We are grateful to our caregivers who are stepping up in a big way to make this possible.”
