Do I need an RN license to apply?

  • You do not need a license to apply to the residency program, but you will need to pass the NCLEX before the program start date. 

I have an associate degree in nursing. Can I apply to the residency program?

  • You are welcome to apply.  If you are hired into the residency program with an ADN, you will need to enroll in a BSN program within 2 years of hire.

I haven’t worked as a nurse for four years.  Can I apply to the residency program?

  • You would not be eligible for the residency program. Consider checking your state board of nursing website for information about refresher courses.

How many new graduate positions are there?

  • The size of each group will vary depending on staffing needs.

How long is the program?  Will I be paid while I am in the program?

  • The program is 1 year long.  You are hired into a position on your unit and all residency-related time is paid time.  The residency program supplements your working at the bedside on your unit. Although the program is 1 year long, we ask for a 2 year commitment to PeaceHealth.

Can I choose the area I want to work in?

  • You will be able to state your preferred clinical areas and we will make an effort to honor your choices, but final assignments will be made based on unit-specific staffing needs. Specialty area assignments could include (ED, ICU, OB, OR) require candidates to have completed either a senior practicum, or have previous work experience in that specialty.

Are there any costs or fees to participate? 

  • PeaceHealth recognizes the significant investment we are making in the development of your professional nursing practice.  If you fulfill the obligations of the program, there is no cost to you.

Will I be working 8 or 12 hour shifts?

  • Your shift length will depend on your unit of hire.  Some units utilize 8-hour shifts and other units utilize 12-hour shifts.

How many hours will I work?

  • You will need to be available to work 32 – 40 hours per week.

Do I have to participate each month in the program activities?

  • Must participate in all program activities throughout the 12 month period as outlined under the “expectations of a nurse resident tab”.

Do I have to sign paperwork stating I will honor the two year PeaceHealth commitment?

  • Yes, you would need to be willing to sign a two year commitment agreement prior to starting.

How and when can I apply?

  • We currently hire 2 cohorts per year.  Applications open for a period of time prior to each hiring window.  New graduate nurses are not hired outside of the residency program. 

What do I need to apply?

  • Apply online when the “Graduate Nurse Residency Program” positions opens.  The position will be posted for 3 weeks.  Application must include the online application, cover letter, resume and clinical narrative questions as asked in the posting. 

What type of references do I need?

  • Clinical instructor references will be required.  These could include educators, preceptors, instructors and previous work supervisors.

What days of the week will I be working?

  • Your days will rotate, so plan on being available any day of the week and weekend as the schedule rotates.

When can I transfer to another department?

  • As a new graduate you will be eligible per the union contract to transfer into another department after 18 months.
