Riyad C. Karmy-Jones MD

Raised in Alberta, Canada, Dr. Karmy-Jones received his medical degree from the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, in 1983. He has completed his general surgery training at George Washington medical center sand then his trauma/critical care fellowship at MedStar, both in Washington DC. He completed his Cardiovascular and Thoracic residency in Edmonton, finishing his training in 1994. He was an associate professor of surgery at Case Western Reserve University, based out of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit for three years before moving to the University of Washington, where he became an associate professor and chief of thoracic surgery at Harborview. While there, he completed a fellowship in interventional radiology. He moved to Vancouver in 2006. He is board certified in general surgery (US and Canada), surgical critical care (US), cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery (Canada) and cardiothoracic surgery (US). He won the teaching awards at both Henry Ford Hospital and the University of Washington, has published over 200 papers and chapters including three text books. He is a member of the American Association of Trauma, the Western Trauma Association (where he is currently a board member) and numerous thoracic societies. Between 1991 and 2000 he served in the Canadian Army reserves as a medical officer. Although somewhat creaky, he still enjoys jogging and military history.
