Biography
We are pleased to welcome Penelope Barnes, MD, PhD, to the PeaceHealth Medical Group Infectious Disease team of providers. Dr. Barnes’ medical interests include orthopedic, fungal, spinal and neurological infections; outpatient IV antibiotic therapy (OPAT); infections in transplant and cancer patients; and bacterial pathogenesis. She has served as an associate professor, researcher, leader and presenter in the field of Infectious Diseases (ID), but clinical medicine is her passion.
Dr. Barnes comes to PeaceHealth from Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU). During her time at OHSU, she founded its OPAT program; started multidisciplinary clinics for the prevention and treatment of orthopedic infections; and provided training and mentorship to medical students, fellows and residents. She was also invited to join the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons’ advisory committee to develop national centers of excellence for orthopedic infections.
Dr. Barnes fell in love with the U.S. 18 years ago, when she first arrived from the U.K. She enjoys hiking, skiing, kayaking, gardening and taking in classical choral music concerts. She is thrilled to be close to the mountains of the North Cascades.
