Achilles Tendon Injury: Calf Test
Topic Overview
The calf squeeze test (also called the Thompson or the Simmond's
test) can identify an
Achilles tendon rupture. While you are kneeling on a
chair with your legs hanging over the edge, or lying face down with your lower
legs bent up 90 degrees, your doctor will squeeze your
calves.
- If the Achilles tendon is still attached, your
foot will flex downward.
- If the tendon is ruptured, your foot will
not move.
- If there is a partial tear, the calf squeeze test may be
normal.
