Delirium tremens (also called DTs) is the name for medical problems that can happen when a person who has a
physical dependence on alcohol suddenly stops using alcohol. DTs
happen only if a person has had long-term, heavy use of alcohol.
Symptoms
of DTs include:
- Shaking (tremors).
- High blood pressure.
- Fast
heartbeat.
- Sweating.
- Confusion or hallucinations
(delirium).
Delirium tremens can be life-threatening. Doctors treat delirium tremens in the hospital with prescription medicines.
