‘Facing the Challenges of Aging’ Talk: Rekindling the Caregiver’s Spirit

7/8/2013

The Adult Day Health Center (ADHC) at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center will host a talk by Nanette Davis, PhD, as part of the ADHC lecture series, “Facing the Challenges of Aging,” titled “Rekindling the Caregiver’s Spirit.”

Dr. Davis, a Bellingham-based caregiver coach and educator who most recently taught at Western Washington University is the author of “The ABC’s of Caregiving: Words to Inspire You” and “Caregiving Our Loved Ones: Stories and Strategies that will Change Your Life.”

According to Dr. Davis, little attention has been paid to the emotional reactions of caregivers as their loved one struggles with a chronic disease.

“Admitting to anger, resentment and exhaustion can actually lighten the caregiver’s journey,” Dr. Davis said. So her talk will share the traits of resilient people – “by reframing the situation in the most positive terms possible.”

The presentation will be 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, July 18 at the ADHC, 809 E. Chestnut in Bellingham. The talk is free and open to the public; however, due to space limitations RSVP is required by Tuesday, July 14. Phone 788-6410 to register for the talk.

The Adult Day Health Center provides nursing, therapeutic exercise and activities to support older adults and people with disabilities or long-term illness, and enable them to remain in their homes. The ADHC also provides a variety of caregiver support services including support groups, staff consultation and education. Through collaboration with other community care providers, the Center helps ensure that families who live with chronic illness or disability are provided the help they need.
