Genetic Screening

Genetic screening is available for those who are considered at high risk for developing breast and ovarian cancer, colon cancer, or melanoma.

After a complete review of family and personal cancer history, patients receive education regarding their own risk and possible options that are available including genetic testing. Through complex blood testing, it may be determined a person has a gene defect or mutation that places them at a higher than normal risk for developing certain types of cancer.

High risk criteria includes:

  • A family or personal history of breast, ovarian or colon cancer before the age of 50
  • A family history of any men with breast cancer
  • A personal history of a high number of colorectal polyps
  • A personal or family history of melanoma, pancreatic cancer or multiple cancers in the same individual.

Ethics Consultation

St. John Medical Center Ethicist and Ethics Committee are available to assist patients, families and providers in examining the ethical considerations with regard to treatment planning and decision-making. For more information, call (360) 414-7681.
