"We are often asked how we can stay positive when working with cancer patients. Our patients are the most important aspect of our job. We can learn so much from them, about life and the human spirit. That's the real journey."—Gail Weeks, RN, BS, oncology nurse coordinator/educator
PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center's nurse navigators
(L to R): Laurie Christensen,
Gail Weeks, and Chris O'Hara
PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center's nurse navigators are registered nurses specializing in oncology. Like compasses that provide direction, they want to be trusted guides for you and your loved ones throughout your journey with cancer. For example, they can:
- Explain what your diagnosis means and what different treatment options involve.
- Ask your doctor any questions or concerns you may be reluctant to express.
- Help coordinate your care with surgery, radiation therapy, infusion services, insurance, social workers, clinical trials, nutrition, medications and other services.
Nurse navigators also help your referring physician by immediately providing a consistent, ongoing liaison with PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. They can help expedite connections to other specialists, follow up with test and treatment results, and ensure that your physician is kept up-to-date about the care you receive at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.
Throughout your journey, you are always in charge of the paths you take and the decisions you make, but you can count on your nurse navigator to be an "angel at your side."Kearney Breast Center Nurse Navigator
