Volunteer FAQs

What is my time commitment?
Volunteers commit to serve for a minimum of 100 hours.  Volunteers typically work a four hour shift once each week.  Shifts are scheduled seven days a week, starting as early as 6:00am and ending as late as 10:00pm. Verification of hours served for high school senior projects will not be signed until the completion of at least 75 hours of volunteer service.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?
The minimum age is 15 years old and a high school student. High school students must have a minimum 2.8 GPA.

What is the process for becoming a volunteer?
The first step is to attend a one-hour Information Session. At the Information Session you will learn about the volunteer program; the steps for becoming a volunteer, the expectations and requirements. You can then pick up an application form to complete and mail to us.

The second step is to attend a four and one-half hour New Volunteer Orientation and Training Seminar. At the end of the orientation you will receive an application packet.

Once you have completed the application packet, you will call our office to schedule a personal interview. During your interview we will review your application packet, begin the TB testing process, and give you some homework.

Once you bring us your completed homework and we have completed your background and reference checks, you will meet with us for placement.

How often are the Information Sessions and Orientations?
There are generally two or three Information Sessions monthly, except in December. There is generally one Orientation each month held on a Saturday from 8:30am to 1:00pm.

Do the volunteers wear a uniform?
Yes. Adult volunteers have a choice of a jacket or apron. Junior volunteers wear a gray polo shirt.

Will I be able to shadow a doctor? Do you have research positions available? Does PeaceHealth Southwest offer internships and/or externships?
Our volunteer program is only for long-term approved candidates who desire to serve the Organization on a weekly basis for 100 hours or more. Volunteers Services does not have a "Job Shadow" outreach program. Please contact our Education Department at (360) 514-2190 for information.

If I volunteer will I get a job at the hospital?
Volunteering at the hospital does not guarantee employment at PeaceHealth Southwest.

Can I continue volunteering beyond my 100 hour commitment?
Yes! We have many volunteers who have served well beyond 100 hours. In order to continue volunteering you must attend mandatory trainings and in-service sessions.

Where can I volunteer?
Volunteers provide service in nearly 50 service areas affiliated with PeaceHealth Southwest throughout the community. These areas include the Emergency Department, Intensive Care and Cardiovascular Intensive Care Units, Family Birth Center, Inpatient Surgery, Same Day Services, Cancer Services, and 4 South Nursing Unit. Volunteers may also greet guests and patients, give directions, provide wheelchair escorts, and deliver flowers. Volunteers also enjoy supporting the Gift Shops. You may request a particular service site, but we cannot guarantee that an opening will be available. Scheduling is done based on your availability and the needs of the department.
