Doctors who provide medical care for women are obstetricians/gynecologists (OB/GYNs). Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs) can also devote their practice to caring for women.
OB/GYNs may be best known for taking care of mothers-to-be (and their unborn babies) during pregnancy, childbirth and after the baby is born. But they do much more.
OB/GYNs and ARNPs diagnose and treat a wide range of diseases or conditions of the female reproductive system. OB/GYNs are also licensed to perform surgical procedures.
Women's health specialists can also help you prevent problems (or catch them early) through annual exams, screenings, education and counsel on healthy lifestyle choices.
You can choose a GYN provider to serve as your primary-care provider. Or you can ask your primary-care provider for a referral to an OB/GYN for specialty care related to reproductive health issues.
