Safe Place for NewbornsThe Safety of Newborn Children Law allows you to leave an infant in a safe place, confidentially and without punishment. This law was created in an effort to prevent deaths of unwanted newborns, give parents options and provide resources to assist with finding newborns foster care and homes.
Under this law, you must physically hand your baby to a qualified person at one of three designated locations:
- The emergency department of a hospital in Washington state
- A fire station during its hours of operation
- A federally designated rural health clinic during its hours of operation
PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center’s Haggen Family Emergency & Trauma Center is a designated safe-haven. Leaving your baby at a safe-haven ensures they will be given medical care and placed in a good home.
