Robotic-Assisted Throat Surgery

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the da Vinci™ system for head and neck cancer procedures in 2010. PeaceHealth Medical Group otolaryngologist Abraham Sorom, MD, was among the first surgeons in Oregon to successfully use TORS to treat cancer patients.

The technology allows surgeons to access benign and malignant masses in the mouth and throat. TORS is performed through the mouth, eliminating the need for disfiguring open surgery in appropriate patients. In select cases, the unprecedented access to difficult-to-reach areas can eliminate the need for radiation therapy, or lessen the intensity required.
