Nuclear Medicine: Pump Scans

This category includes imaging of two different types of pumps: pain control and delivery of chemotherapy to the liver.

The pain pump is implanted in the abdominal cavity and contains medication that is delivered directly into the spinal canal. It has a reservoir that can be easily assessed by a pain control physician. The rate of infusion of the pain medication is set by a computer.

The hepatic infusion pump is also implanted into the abdomen and contains medication that is delivered directly into the hepatic artery.  It has a reservoir that can be easily assessed by the surgical oncologist (cancer specialist).  The purpose of this pump is to deliver chemotherapy specifically to a liver affected by tumor(s).
