Cancer Care Conferences
The best and most effective cancer care comes from a team of specialists working together to meet a patient's individual needs. Cancer specialists at Sacred Heart meet monthly or twice monthly to discuss certain patients’ cases and weigh treatment strategies. These cancer care conferences are sometimes called tumor boards. They are a key to Sacred Heart’s team approach to cancer care.
Cancer care conferences are organized around particular sub-specialties, such as brain or gynecologic cancer. Each cancer conference is attended by experts in different parts of cancer care, including:
- Radiologists and pathologists, who help diagnose cancer
- Medical oncologists, who are experts in chemotherapy
- Radiation oncologists, who are experts in radiation therapy
- Surgical specialists
By bringing together experts from various fields into one room, cancer care conferences give patients the personal attention of many different specialists in addition to their own doctor.
