Who Qualifies For Surgery?

Surgical weight loss is not for everyone. The Oregon Bariatric Center follows American Society for Bariatric Surgery guidelines to determine who could have a surgical weight loss procedure. The ideal patient will:

  • Be 100 pounds overweight
  • Have a BMI of 40 or higher
  • Have a history of documented attempts at weight loss
  • Not have alcohol, drug, or smoking problems

If you have a BMI of 35-39.9 and another condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or heart disease, you can also be considered for surgical weight loss.
