Free performance by Oregon Bach Festival youth choir to be held at Sacred Heart Medical Center on July 2
The 93-member Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy and members of the Oregon Bach Festival orchestra will perform a free, 45-minute concert in the lobby at Sacred Heart at RiverBend at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, July 2.
Drawn from across the country, the choir, which includes seven local youth, will perform “This House of Peace,” an original choral piece commissioned for the 2008 opening of Sacred Heart at RiverBend.
Written by Minnesota composer Ralph M. Johnson, “This House of Peace” is a testament to the hospital’s healing mission and patient-centered design. Johnson adapted the words of a Gaelic house blessing for the chorus, but the lyrics are drawn from the words of actual patients and family members at Sacred Heart.
Johnson will attend the performance and both he and Conductor Anton Armstrong will make remarks. “This House of Peace,” which premiered at the 2008 Bach Festival, was also performed at Carnegie Hall in 2010. In 2012, it became a published piece and is now being performed at various venues across the country.
